In Japanese, Sunao means honesty. It is a word that holds more than truthfulness; it carries the spirit of living with clarity, humility, and respect for the natural world. The Sunao Collection is born from this philosophy, an exploration of how simple forms and honest materials can create vessels that feel both timeless and alive.

The inspiration lies in the dialogue between nature and craft. Each vase and plant pot is shaped to frame what it holds, yet never overshadows it. The Dot finish brings a playful yet refined expression to the smooth form, with deep indigo blue dots flowing across a soft mineral-white ceramic base. Inspired by the graphic simplicity of traditional Japanese ceramics, the rich blue accents draw from aizome, the centuries-old Japanese art of indigo dyeing. Their organic placement introduces rhythm, contrast, and a subtle sense of movement, while the matte surface highlights the natural character of the ceramic.

Every piece is hand painted, carrying subtle variations that make it one of a kind, echoing the Japanese belief that beauty is found in uniqueness and quiet detail. Just as no leaf, branch, or wave is ever identical, no Sunao vessel is the same. Shaped from natural clay and fired at high temperatures, the ceramic combines durability with the individuality of hand-applied colour, while subtle variations in tone, texture, and detail ensure that each vase is unique.

Whether standing with flowers, branches, or greenery, or existing in sculptural silence, the Sunao Vase, Mini becomes more than an object. It is a companion to daily life, a reminder of honesty in design and in living, where simplicity allows nature to take centre stage. Its balanced proportions make it a natural presence on a shelf, console, side table, or other considered surface, where the interplay of mineral-white ceramic, indigo details, and light can be appreciated from every angle.

Design by Kristian Sofus Hansen & Tommy Hyldahl

Tommy Hyldahl and Kristian Sofus Hansen intertwine their distinct sensibilities to create designs where storytelling, materiality, and timeless form meet in quiet harmony.

With a background in fashion, Tommy brings an intuitive eye for trends, colors, and textures. His process is one of layering histories, blending details and references from past design periods and reimagining them into something fresh and contemporary. Each collection unfolds as a narrative, evolving from concept to creation, with every element contributing to a greater story.

Kristian, who has lived and studied in Japan, seeks to unite Japanese aesthetics with Danish design, creating a characteristic twist on simplicity itself. His work is defined by the search for subtle, original details that elevate each piece with a unique signature. About the Material & Colour

Ceramic

Ceramic is one of the oldest and most enduring materials, celebrated for its strength, versatility, and timeless beauty. Shaped from natural clay and fired at high temperatures, it achieves a density and durability that make it ideal for both functional and decorative use. Its smooth surface provides the perfect canvas for craftsmanship.

Our ceramic is elevated through hand painting, where layers of pigment are carefully applied by skilled artisans. This process creates subtle variations in tone, texture, and detail, ensuring that no two pieces are ever alike. The result is a material that combines resilience with individuality practical enough for everyday use, yet refined enough to stand as an object of art.

Hand-painted ceramic embodies the harmony of nature, craft, and time: a surface that carries both the permanence of fired clay and the soulful presence of the human hand.

Dot

Inspired by the graphic simplicity of traditional Japanese ceramics, Dot features a soft mineral-white ceramic base adorned with deep indigo blue accents. The matte surface highlights the natural character of the ceramic material, creating a calm and understated foundation. The rich blue dots draw inspiration from aizome, the centuries-old Japanese art of indigo dyeing, introducing rhythm, contrast, and a playful sense of movement across the form. Their organic placement and hand-painted appearance celebrate craftsmanship and subtle imperfection, while the dialogue between the light ceramic surface and deep indigo details creates a balanced and timeless expression rooted in simplicity, harmony, and thoughtful design.

Maintenance

Our hand-painted ceramic pieces are crafted as decorative objects, designed to age gracefully when cared for with gentleness.

The outer surface of our pieces is hand-painted and should be treated with the same reverence dust lightly with a soft, dry cloth, allowing the painted character to remain untouched. Water, harsh cleaners, or abrasives should never meet this surface, as they can disturb its delicate finish.

Vases are sealed within and may hold water for fresh flowers. Clean their interiors gently with lukewarm water, then dry carefully, taking care that no moisture touches the painted exterior.

To preserve their vibrancy, keep each piece away from prolonged sunlight and sudden shifts in temperature. With such mindful care, every ceramic piece will hold its artistry, warmth, and timeless presence for years to come.
